Hannah's Eye Appointment

Hannah basically rocked her eye appointment. This child has no fear when it comes to doctor offices - I really have never seen anything like it. She is never hesitant and always cooperative. The first reason for the visit was to check on the area of her eyelid that had the hemangioma when she was born. Although you would never know it was there, it has caused a very slight droop in her eyelid and therefore can cause some vision issues as she grows. Bo and I were noticing her run into things a lot - walls, doors, etc. Then, we noticed her having some difficulty naming certain colors. She would get pink, white, black, purple with no problem. When it came to blue, green and yellow she was having trouble. So, we were worried she was having some symptoms of being colorblind.

Well, Hannah struts herself into the pediatric eye doctors office and sits in the chair by herself. The assistant had her look at the wall (mirror) and name some pictures (christmas tree, house, duck, bicycle, etc) with no help at all. Then, she would make the pictures smaller, and smaller an smaller. She had Hannah cover each eye with the little eye cover tool and Hannah got everything just fine.

She did the colorblind screening where Hannah had to trace some numbers on little cards filled with different colored bubbles. She had to trace the right color and she did just fine with  her blues and greens. They also said boys are more prone to be colorblind and they really did not see concerns.

Then the assistant had to put drops in her eyes. She just laid back and they had butterflies hanging from the ceiling and they told her to look at them. I just said, "Hannah, she needs to get your eye wet." She laid back, got the drops like a pro and was just fine.

We then had to wait in the playroom for her eyes to dilate. The doctor then called us back and Hannah sits in the chair by herself again. The doctor checked the overall health of her eyes and the area where the hemangioma was. She said that she still saw the slight droop in her eyelid and that it could eventually cause her to develop an astigmatism. But, she was very happy with everything she saw. She said to have preschool do her vision screening and then update her with those results next year. If that screening is okay, then she won't need to see Hannah again until 2014.

I was so pleased and super proud of Hannah. The doctor asked me when her birthday was and I told her October. She could not believe a two and half year old was so good about the doctor, answering questions, getting correct answers and being so relaxed about all that was done to her. She looked at Hannah said, "you are a little smarty aren't you?"

I was very relieved that everything went okay. I was so worried about that hemangioma on her eye when she was a baby and I am very blessed that nothing came out of it. It certainly could have done some damage on her eye if the tables were turned.

I told Hannah she could choose a treat that day and all she wanted to do was go to Chuck E Cheese that night and so we did!

Hannah sporting the glasses the doctor gave her to wear outside. Her little eyes were dilated until the next morning. They also gave her a sticker that she was very proud of and a fruit snack!
